Paris Mountain 7k Trail Run

Some background going into this race is . . the longest I had jogged without stopping was 3 miles, this race was 4.5 miles on a trail in the mountains. . . . Yep, I say go hard or go home I guess. Race morning consisted of dropping Addison off at my grandmas before 6:50 am to rush and meet Sarah so I could get some shorts (very important) of mine she had.

I was going to this race all by myself with only Wrigley in tow, and was kind of happy that I didn’t really know many people there. My only goal was to not walk during this race. My running has been super slow and all I could hope for was to complete it in one piece. The rain storm the night before was sure to turn Wrigley the color of burnt orange, and also meant for one slippery trail run. We started to race near the back of the pack off to the side so Wrigley wouldn’t be in the way which seemed to work out fairly well. The only problem, I didn’t even get .25 mile into the run before I felt the need to pee. Now its not like I didn’t go to the bathroom 15 times w/in the past 5 minutes, it just doesn’t seem to matter anymore! This is where the black shorts come in handy, phew! I try to ignore my lack of bladder control and start to focus on finding someone to pace me. All of the sudden I come up on this older guy who is going a little slower than me, but I decide to try to stay behind him and start out slow. Sure enough this is the best thing I did all day. I managed to stay steady behind him up until the last mile. About the last mile it was downhill and Wrigley and I could maneuver a little quicker than he could so we passed him.

It’s about this time I start wanting to walk, I’m not quite sure how far to the finish and am just feeling exhausted. Someone doing a cool down passes us going the other way and I ask him how much farther in that “I’m gonna die if you tell me much farther” tone, and he responds with about a 1/3 mile left. I seriously think I could have cried. I finished the race without walking! My time was 50 minutes and some change, and I couldn’t have asked for a better running partner in Wrigley. This was Wrigley’s longest run to date and I was so proud. I had countless people come up to me afterwards talking about how well behaved and responsive she was to my commands while running. She even posed for a few pics after the race, what a ham!
